The program for the studio imagines an international Art Market equal to Art Basel or Frieze Art Fair occupying the Carriageworks at Eveleigh. Students will catalogue their experiences of the site, which will include attending Sydney Contemporary at Carriageworks running concurrent with the semester (September 12th-°©15th) and through study of select precedents, explore concepts and ideas afforded by the typology.
Students are asked to challenge conventional responses to a gallery brief, with 3 key areas of inquiry:
Designing for the experience of Art
The Politics of Exchange
Technical / Functional Challenges
Ultimately the studio seeks solutions to understand how we can better design Sydney’s own art fair (Sydney Contemporary) in the context of a globally connected art market and a historic industrial site. The Experience of Art is a very loaded issue for designers with the definition of contemporary art itself in flux. We see this as broad and fertile terrain for new architectural thinking.
