Space for action and response
SPR 2016 86530 : Performative Spaces 1 : Spatial Agency

Project:  To design Theater and Community center in the Lake country in western NSW  The scheme must take into account how to be self sustaining, educational and economically productive.  By designing a contemporary understanding of the models of cooperatives that transgress the boundaries of race, gender and generation to bring  community together.

The project will address issues of context and intervention, action and boundary and the architectural response to the problems created as rural towns grapple with their isolation and history in the face of a distracted twenty-first century media filled common world. We will try to implement institutions that bring the many facets of the community to a common ground.  We invite students to use architecture to mediate between the differing physical and social situations existing on the site.   Students will explore the boundaries of their private obsessions given their role as public servant charged with the problem of interpreting the nexus between the modern, the rural and theirs role as an interpreter of space as a designer.  We will ask students to focus on the discord between philanthropy, politics, the consequences of poverty and inequity.

We propose the basic question: is there a belief today in architecture’s ability to contribute to the social well-being of people and if so, how can we represent it?
